Always starting from a humanistic and compassionate baseline.
Musa Alves
Senior Graphic Designer
I am first generation Brazilian-American and have been designing since I was 14. I started making flyers for music venues by hand, clipping elements from magazines and books, then printing them at Kinko’s. In 2008 I interned at Kirna Zabete, a high-end-fashion SoHo boutique, in their e-commerce office, where I learned the Adobe suite + fashion photography, web sales, and marketing.
I carried these skills to Tulane University, in my hometown of New Orleans, and graduated Summa Cum Laude (scoring the Tulane 34 award) with a BA in Graphic Design. Since graduating, I have received my certification in UX design via Google and am now a Senior Graphic Designer. I spent over a decade in freelance, working in various industries such as non-profits, publishing, and healthcare technology. I have experience designing for national conferences, international and national ad campaigns (in both digital and print), home and office interiors, national book releases, websites, promotional materials, brand concepts, original logos, info sheets, white papers, large scale signage and wall covers, social media campaigns, corporate DEI reports, and everything else in between.
In November 2023 I became a leader in diversity and inclusion with a focus on empowering women in the workplace as President of Gainwell Technologies' Women's Opportunity Network (WON)—the company's largest employee resource group (ERG)/ I have driven initiatives to rebrand, restructure, and enhance the group's impact for over 13,000+ employees. My work has included redesigning our website and logo, launching the WON IMPACT program to foster community engagement through volunteer work and donations, and establishing resources like a dedicated LinkedIn support group, newsletter, and member surveys to amplify our reach and support. I lead member assemblies, coordinate events, and deliver workshops on career wellness and creative expression, furthering our commitment to supporting women at all stages of their careers.
Other passions include photography and painting. I had my first solo show at 24, and recently participated in a group show in Paris, France. In 2022 I was selected to exhibit at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans for their annual Louisiana Contemporary show.
Fun fact: I was an international DJ, which is how I put myself through college. I toured all over the world, played at the Cannes film festival, Afropunk in Brooklyn, SXSW, and festivals to upwards of 35,000+ people.
In 2020 I started a project, Resume R3design, offering free resume design to anyone who has been laid off and is looking for work. If you are in need, please reach out.
